Two kinds of crystals were obtained by the reaction of histidine and cupric ion. The ratio of histidine and copper was found to be 1 : 1 and 2 : 1 (Table I). The former was insoluble while the latter was soluble in methanol. The chromatographic separation of these copper-histidine chelates on silica gel G was achieved by development with a mixture (9 : 1) of methanol and water (Fig. 1). The structures of copper-histidine chelates were presumed from infrared data. In the copper-histidine chelate of 1 : 2,the coordination from the α-amino nitrogen and the nitrogen of imidazole to copper could be presumed. The carbonyl-oxygen approaches the copper closely enough to be considered as loosely bound (Fig. 6-a). In the copper-histidine chelate of 1 : 1,the coordination through the carbonyl group and the nitrogen of the imidazole ring was presumed to form a seven-membered ring (Fig. 6-b).
