Cefodizime sodium (CDZM, THR-221) is a new semi-synthetic cephalosporin. The alkaline and neutral degradation of cefodizime and structural elucidation of its degradation products were investigated. In aqueous alkaline and neutral solutions, cefodizime was degraded to the C-7 positional isomer of the β-lactam ring [THR-221-C], Δ_3-cephemform [THR-221-B], methoxyimino-aminothiazolyl aldehyde [THR-221-V] and mercaptothiazole [THR-221-VI].Based on the structural elucidation, the alkaline and neutral degradation pathways of cefodizime were determined.
