Gall Usurpation and Lethal Fighting among Fundatrices of the Aphid Epipemphigus niisimae (Homoptera, Pemphigidae)

A number of Epipemphigus niisimae galls contained one or more dead fundatrices besides a living one. We explained this by showing that 1) first instar fundatrices intrude into conspecific galls and 2) the owner and the intruder fight in the gall often until one's death. The fighting behaviour of 1st and 2nd instar fundatrices is described. In the fight between 1st instar fundatrices the larger individual won significantly more frequently than the smaller. Second instar fundatrices were inferior to 1st instar ones in fighting ability. It is suggested that the risk of being usurped in the 2nd stadium by 1st instar intruders has prolonged the 1st stadium of E. niisimae to some extent.
