The ichneumonid wasp Latibulus argiolus, a parasitoid of Polistes biglumis, has spring and summer forms parasitizing mainly pre- and post-emergence colonies of the host, respectively. Parasitoid females spend an average of 20 minutes before alighting on the nest, and deposit eggs on the wall of cells containing various developmental stages. However, only eggs laid in cells of mature larvae seem to have a chance to develop into adults. Host wasps, when they detect a parasitoid, perform "alarm" behaviour, but its communicative effectiveness is unclear. Nearly all colonies have at least one cell parasitized by the end of the season. Due to this parasitoid P. biglumis colonies suffer on an average 20% loss of foundress-reared workers and 7 and 13% loss of reproductives in two different areas.
