Foundress-replacement on Nests of the Monogynic Paper Wasp Polistes biglumis in Japan (Hymenoptera, Vespidae)

• A total of 22 cases of foundress-replacement (change in ownership of nests) were observed on pre- and post-emergence nests of Polistes biglumis. In the six cases, succeeding foundresses were those that had their original nests removed or destroyed before. They acquired new nests 14-66m away from their original nest sites. Two succeeding foundresses succeeded in producing their own reproductive offspring. A case of successful nest usurpation is described : the usurper dominated the owner with vigorous biting and expelled the latter from the nest.
