In Neodiprion sertifer the oocytes were fully formed in the pupae and probably finished developing later larval instars. All of the cells such as oocytes, nurse cells, and follicle cells in the germarium were degenerating even in the pupae. There were 1-4 (mean 2.5) oocytes per ovariole. The number of oocytes was fixed and did not increase further. The maturation of oocytes was very rapid. The first chorionated eggs (Stage IV) were found in 2 day-old adults. The number of chorionated eggs increased up until 6 day-old adults, but then no increase was observed. Only half of total oocytes developed into chorionated eggs, while other half remained at Stage I (previtellogenic oocyte) and then degenerated. The rapid maturation of oocytes and the degeneration of the other half oocytes are considered to be mainly related to the longevity of adults.
