Using light and electron microscopy, the ovarian structure and oogenesis in the rice water weevil, Lissorphoptrus oryzophilus were described. Each of paired ovaries consists of two telotrophic ovarioles. The structure of the ovary was characterized by a large mycetocytial syncytium which was restricted to the anteriormost zone of the germarium of each ovariole and filled with numerous bacterium-like microorganisms. These microorganisms were rich not only in the mycetocyte but also in the trophocytes and the growing oocytes. However, they were not detected in the follicular cells. It was suggested that the microorganisms are transmitted into the oocyte through the nutritive cord from the trophocytes and then self-reproduce during the oogenesis. Although the oogenesis of this species roughly agreed with those of other coleopteran insects, morphodynamic changes of the follicular cells, columnar to semispherical and finally flat in shape, were a characteristic feature during vitellogenesis.
