Soon after spherical pearls were successfully cultured in 1920, cultured pearl industry developed rapidly, both in expanding pearl fishery fields and in developing new techniques for mass-production of cultured pearls. It was just after the World War I and the Japanese capitalism was about to raise its head. Starting from the first pearl fishery field ih the Ago bay, Mie Prefecture, new Lields were developed one after another, e. g., Ise bay in Mie Prefecture, Omura bay in Nagasaki Prefecture, Urano-uchi bay in Kochi Prefecture, Hirashiro bay in Ehime Prefecture, Tanabe bay in Wakayama Prefecture. The areas of pearl fishery fields expanded almost exponentially. There were severe competating among different groups of cultured pearl industry both in expanding fishery field and in developing new techniques. There was, however, not severe conflict between labor and capital in cultured pearl industry. Among the newly developed techniques, the most important was change of way of keeping mother-of-pearls. In the earliest days, they were raised on the sea bed, and were collected by woman divers. Mother pearls were easily suffered by the invasion of Akashio or temperature fluctuation. Later techniques to raise mother-of-pearls in cages hanging from the sea surface became popular, which enabled easy controll to protect them from unfavourable environmental changes. These developments both in fishery fields and culturing techniques made mass-production and therefore mass sales possible. Increase national power of Japan in these days and national sentiment as a large power also backed up the development.
