Although the author believes that the earliest stage of cultured pearl industry in Japan was completed when half pearls were produced artificially by Mikimoto in 1893, some think that this is not a big epoch in the development of cultured pearl industry since half pearls are a mere blister rather than real pearl. However the author believes that this is not so, since it was impossible to produce whole pearls without having experiences of culturing half pearls. Furthermore, cultured half pearls have been sold commercially in jewelry market since 1893, and even now some good quality ones are rather expensive. Mikimoto invested all what he gained out of the production of half pearls and all mother-of-pearl possesed into the experiment to culture whole pearls, and he eventually succeeded in 1905. He knew empirically by that time the principle of pearl-formation in mother-of-pearl, which was described by a zoologist, Dr. T, Nishikawa in the patent applied in 1907, 6 years earlier than the publication of the theory on pearl-.formation by a German zoologist. Alverdes. When Mikimoto succeeded, there were already many competitors in Japan. It was almost like gold-rush.
