After the close of the world war 2, the Japanese cultured pearl industry had experienced rapid development and expansion both in the area for cultivation and the production of cultured pearls. By 1952, the production had recovered to the level of the pre-war time, and since then it increased like a boom until 1955. Among the many Japanese industries which were heavily damaged during the war and stirctly controlled by the occupation forces after the war, the cultured pearl industry had been regarded as one of the most hopeful peace industry which could earn foreign currencies. Although this boom resulted in unprecedented development of Japanese cultured pearl industry, it also brought forth over-produciton. In 1968, the Japanese pearl industry had to face a depression. This is partly because that there was no self-control in produciton among people engaged in pearl industry during this period, and partly because the world pearl market had become controlled by foreigners. People in the field did not realize this. The Japanese pearl industry experienced rapid recovery and boom much earlier than the other industries, but also had to face much earlier depression. It seems that the history of the cultured pearl industry which was invented and developed by the Japanese shows vividly eruptive energy and nationality of the Japanese.
