When cultured spherical pearls appeared for the first time in the word market in 1920, a dispute arose in the pearl market of London and Paris since people were afraid of depreciation of prices of natural pearls and of threat of pushing of cultured pearls into the market. People in the pearl market tried to advertise that cultured pearls were Just an Imrtatlon and completely dlLferent from natural pearls m all aspect. However, Ieading biologists of these days, for instance, Dr. L. Jameson in England, Dr. L. Boutan in France published papers reporting that there was no essential difference at all between natural and cultured pearls so far as their nacres were concerned. These statements played an important role in stabilizing the dispute, and both users and consumers gradually appreciated the values of cultured pearls and started to use them similarly as natural pearls. Nowaday, it simply means cultured pearls when people talk about pearls. Academic fields offered the theory of formation of pearls to the early day pearl industry in Japan, and also played an important role to certificate the quality of cultured pearls when they entered the market. This relation between academic field and pearl industry seems to suggest a desirable relation for future gemmo1ogical societies in Japan.
