1. The kidney structure of the marine catfish, Plotosus anguillaris, was studied histologically, being compared with that of the fresh water catfish, Parasilurus asotus. 2. The nephron of the marine catfish, similarly to that of the fresh water catfish, can be subdivided as follows; glomerulus, ciliated neck segment, proximal convoluted segment, distal convoluted segment and initial collecting tubule. 3. In Plotosus anguillaris, the glomeruli are relatively large in size, but are fewer than those of fresh water catfish. The ciliated and long neck segment is present, measuring 170μ in length. 4. In the proximal convoluted segment, the free surface of epithelial cells is covered with the brush border. This segment is further subdivided into two distinct portions of markedly different histological structure. a) Epithelial cells of the first portion contain a various number of large granules stained with iron-hematoxylin. These granules seem to be derived from mitochondria and probably correlated with absorptive function. b) Epithelial cells of the second portion are generally rich in mitochondria, and in the basal part of the cells up to the para-nuclear region, a majority of rod-shaped mitochondria are arranged densely and perpendicularly to the basement membrane, forming so many basal striations. 5. In Plotosus anguillaris, nephron has the distal convoluted segment but this segment is not well developed and short in its length. Judging from the existence of the distal convoluted segment, following the proximal convoluted segment, it can be concluded that the marine catfish, Plotosus anguillaris, falls into the group of fresh water teleosts in terms of the structure of its nephron. It also seems that this fish invades into the sea in the nearer past than other marine teleosts. 6. In the first portion of the proximal convoluted segment and the initial collecting tubule, the cytoplasmic protrusions of papillar shape of the epithelial cells are often remarkably observed. These structures are considered to indicate the secretory activity of epithelial cells.
