The process of wrinkling was observed in Astropecten scoparius VALENCIENNES. The mature ovum of this species is translucent and approximately 230μ in diameter. The cleavage is of holoblastic, radial type. Five hours after the insemination at 24℃, the egg developed into early blastula furnished with a definite blastocoel. Soon after, egression tracts appeared on the surface of the blastula (Fig. 2). Observation on the sectioned material showed that the egression tracts correspond to multipolar invaginations of the blastoderm (Fig. 5). The invaginations increased in number and size within the following few hours and finally the blastocoel was nearly filled with the invaginated parts of the blastoderm (Fig. 6). Then the egression tracts began to decrease in number and their complexity. Four hours after the beginning of wrinkling, the surface of the blastula resumed smoothness (Fig. 9). The resulting blastula also has a large blastocoel (Fig. 11). General feature of the process of wrinkling in this species was similar to that of Asterina pectinifera (Komatsu, 1972). Nine and a half hours after the insemination, gastrulation by an invagination took place (Fig. 12). From the careful observation on the process, it was concluded that in Astropecten scoparius the invagination for gastrulation is apparently independent of invaginations for wrinkling. About 80 hours after the insemination, the embryo became a bipinnaria with welldeveloped ciliary bands (Fig. 14).
