This paper presents a novel system-level designmethodology, called quality-driven design, by which applicationspecificoptimization can be achieved; furthermore the entirefunctionality can be shared to maximize design reuse. As a caseof study, this paper focuses on quality-driven design for videoapplications and introduces an output quality adaptive approachbased on variable bitwidth optimization to explore a new designspace. MPEG2 video is used as the driver application to illustratethe potential of the presented methodology. Experimentalresults show the effectiveness of the methodology.
