The Cenozoic volcanism in the Ryukyu Islands are classified geologically into five groups. The 1st volcanic activities, as submarine volcanism took place during the period ranging from the Trias to Eocene into the Shimanto geosyncline, the outer zone of north and central Ryukyu. On the contrary, from the 2nd to 5th are terrestrial volcanism in the inner zone of the Ryukyu Islands. The volcanic activities of the Green Tuff crustal movement are the 2nd in the Eocene and the 3rd in the Miocene. The former is limited in distribution to the Yaeyama islands of south Ryukyu. The Miocene volcanism occured at Takara-jima, Kodakara-jima, Aguni-jima and Kume-jima of north and central Ryukyu. The volcanic activities of the island-arc crustal movement are the 4th in the Pliocene to early Pleistocene and the 5th in the middle Pleistocene to Holocene. The 4th volcanism took place at Kume-jima and Okinawa-jima of central Ryukyu. The 5th volcanism occured in north and central Ryukyu, Kobi-sho in the Senkaku islands and Tatun in Taiwan. In the 5th volcanoes, the Tatun and Kobi-Sho volcanoes do not belong to the Ryukyu volcanic series. Consequently, the volcano of southwestern end in the Ryukyu volcanic series is Okinawa-Iwo-tori-shima, and the volcano belong to the Ryukyu volcanic series, which can not found in the southwestern side of the Miyako depression.
