The late Cenozoic crustal movements of the Japanese island are represented by the Green tuff and the Island arc disturbances, both of which are accompanied with vigorous volcanism. The volcanic rocks in Kyushu, especially in northern and central Kyushu, are closely related to these disturbances, particularly to the volcanism and depression structure, such as the Beppu-Shimabara graben. The volcanism in the Green tuff stage from the Miocene to Pliocene is represented by the Green tuff, Setouchi, Tairiku and second Setouchi series. In the Island arc stage from the upper Pliocene to Holocene, is recognized the volcanism of the Tairiku, Hohi, Bungo, Ryukyu and Sanin Series. The geologic development history by the geologic structure of volcanic field in Kyushu is divided into three stages, In each stage, these are recognized as the elevation and warping of ground by magmatic activity-deep fissuring (deep fracturing) - depression - volcanism. The geologic structure of volcanic field in central Kyushu has been formed by the repetition of the above geologic phenomena, The distribution of each volcanic rock and the direction of depression structure (the Beppu-Shimabara and Kirishima-Kagoshima Bay grabens), are closely related to the direction of Honshu (Japan proper) and Ryukyu arcs, because Kyushu occupies the position of geologic junction between both arcs.
