The present investigation was undertaken to assess the rust inhibiting effect of anionic detergents, as the saponated cresol solution shows a remarkable rust inhibiting effect. In anionic detergents, the neutral anionic detergents, such as sodium benzen allylsulfonate or sodium lauryl sulfate, did not show a remarkable rust inhibiting effect, but the alkali salt of fatty acids, such as medicated soap, showed it. Also, in the evaluation of rust inhibiting effect of various saturated and unsaturated fatty acid sodium salts, the low molecular fatty acid sodium salts, such as propionic acid sodium salt, caprylic acid sodium salt and caprylic acid sodium salt, showed a remarkable rust inhibiting effect, and it was fully efective in using 0.05 to 0.2 per cent solutions. The influence of low molecular fatty acid sodium salts on the antimicrobial activity of chemical disinfectants, such as phenol, cresol and hibiten, was evaluated. However, it did not show a remarkable reduction of germicidal power. As a result, it was suggested that the fatty acid sodium salts can be used for the disinfection of dental instruments, adding it to various disinfectants as an rust inhibitor.
