To elucidate the lateral movement by occlusal guidance, a clutch which does not cover the occlusal surface was devised and installed on a Denar Pantograph, and the mandibular movement was traced. The tracing was reproduced on a Denar SE fully adjustable articulator, and the functional intercondylar distance was determined. Furthermore, the relative position of the functional rotational axis on the working side in the living body was determined by calculation by use of the standardized radiography. The results were as follow. 1. The distance between the terminal hinge points was 150.8±6.3mm and the functional intercondylar distance was 121.3±7.0mm. The two were significantly correlated. 2. The distance from the terminal hinge point on the skin to the functional rotational axis was 14.9±3.4mm. 3. The sagittal incisal guidance angle with the axis-orbita plane as the base was 43.4±14.6°, the sagittal overbite 3.8±1.9mm, and the sagittal overjet 3.9±1.4mm. 4. No significant correlation was recognized between the distance from the median of the articulator to the functional rotational axis and the extent of the sagittal overbite. However, negative correlation was recognized between the shorter one of the two distances from the median to the functional rotational axis and the sagittal overjet. 5. No correlation was recognized between the distance from the median to the functional rotational axis and the cuspid guide angle. 6. When the position of the functional rotational axis determined on the articulator was transposed to the condyle in the living body, it was located 3.4±5.1mm inward from the outermost side of the condyle. 7. As to the position of the functional rotational axis on the condyle, 77.8% was between the condylar center and the outermost point, 11.1% between the condylar center and the innermost point, and 11.1% outside the condylar outermost point. 8. In the occlusion group performing lateral movements by incisal guidance, the distance from the median to the functional rotational axis was 62.4±4.6mm. The distance was 59.1±8.7mm in the group without incisal guidance. 9. It was found that the presence or absence of incisal guidance during lateral movements affect the distance from the median to the functional rotational axis.
