Experimental Studies on Supersonic Combustion Phenomena of CO-O_2-H_2 Premixed Gases around Hypersonic Projectiles

Hypersonic projectiles were fired into CO-O_2 and CO-O_2-H_2 gas mixtures. For observation of combustion phenomena around the projectiles, we employed a high-speed framing schlieren technique. When we used CO-O_2 mixtures as combustible gases, no shock-induced combustion was observed. However, addition of a small amount of H_2 into the CO-O_2 mixtures enabled combustion. We experimentally investigated the dependence of combustion phenomena on the molar fraction of H_2 in the CO-O_2-H_2 gas mixtures. The high-speed framing schlieren technique made it possible to observe and discuss unsteady shock-induced combustion phenomena.
