1. The formation of methylmercury from mercuric sulfide (MS) was investigated. A positive correlation was found between the amount of MS added and the amount of methylmercury formed when methylcobalamin chemically reacted with MS. The same extent of correlation was found when Clostridium cochlearium, T-2,which is capable of forming methlmercury from mercuric chloride (MC) was grown with MS. However, the formation was depressed by a pre-treatment of the MS preparation with H_2S. This suggests that only mercury present in the MS preparation as an impurity was methylated, and pure MS was not. 2. In a mixed culture of C.cochlearium T-2,and sulfate-reducing bacteria, the methylation of mercury by C.cochlearium, T-2,was depressed on account of the preceding conversion of MC to MS by H_2S which was produced from sulfates by sulfate-reducing bacteria. 3. In the usual methane fermentation, methylmercury formation was not observed. MC added to the fermentation was eliminated from the methylation on accunt of the preceding conversion of MC to MS by H_2S, which is usually produced in great quantities during the fermetation. When H_2S and H_2S-generating substances were exhausted from the fermentation liquid, however, a detectable amount of methylmercury was found.
