The morphological change of Clostridium cochlearium T-2,was investigated. A positive correlation between methylmercury formation and sporulation was suggested. The activity of methylmercury formation was found to be highest in a 20 hr culture in which most of cells appeared to be light-dense and rather shorter, with a rod shape, compared to the original vegetative cells. The light-dense cells seemed to proceed to the spore-forming process. Methylcobalamin was found spectroscopically in an extract of the organism. This was coincident with the facts that methane was produced when a cell-free extract was reduced by hydrogen in the presence of PtO_2,and that methylmercury was produced when the extract was chemically reacted with mercuric chloride. Therefore, it was suggested that methylcobalamin might be involved in the biological methylation of mercury in this organism. Methylmercury was found mainly in the culture fluid. Intracellular methylmercury seemed to be bound to cytoplasmic protein.
