In the previous paper it has been reported that micro-organisms exposed to synthetic vitamin K compounds decline in certain oxidation and coupled phosphorylation activities. In this paper, the effects of vitamin K compounds, 2,4-dinitrophenol and p-chloromercurybenzoic acid on the oxidation system and phosphate cycle are described.1) Succinic oxidation by the intat cells of Escherichia coli was inhibited in the presence of the concentrations of the VK compounds which permit some growth of the bacterium, but succinoxidase system of the ground cells of the same bacterium was not influenced even at the concentrations which inhibit any growth of the bacterium. 2) Cell free alcohol dehydrogenase obtained from baker's yeast was scarcely affected by the VK compounds.3) Therefore, the VK compounds are considered so inferior in the effect on sulfhydryl groups involved in oxidative enzymes of micro-organisms that the effect does not bring about the inhibition of the oxidative actions of intact cells.4) On the other hand, uptake of inoganic phosphate from the environments into the cells, oxidatived assimilation of glucose, synthesis of cell proteins, and the formation of an adaptive enzyme (β-galactosidase) were inhibited in the presence of the concentrations of the VK compounds which permit some growth of micro-organisms.5) The numerous effects on micro-organisms exposed to the VK compounds were quite similar to those on micro-organisms exposed to 2,4-dinitrophenol.6) It seems that the inhibition of metabolism of micro-organisms, which obtain most of their energy aerobically, by the VK compounds is primarily due to the inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation.
