In the preceding paper the authors reportted that several species and varieties of Rhodotorula, except for Rhodotorula glutinis (FRES.) HARRISON em. HASEGAWA, required some vitamins for their growth. So the search for the required vitamins was carried out in the present work. The (NH_4)_2SO_4 medium and eight water-soluble vitamins were employed for the purpose. The extent of the vitamin requirement was estimated by the ratio of turbidity due to the yeast growth in each vitamin-deficient medium to that in the medium supplied with the eight vitamins. The value of growth ratio under 5% was regarded as the essential requirement and that under 40% as the stimulative requirement. Rhodotorula rubra (DEMM.) LODDER em. HASEGAWA and Rht. glutinis (FRES.) HARRISON var. dairenensis HASEGAWA required thiamine stimulatively, and both Rhodotorula minuta(SAITO) LODDER and Pht. pallida LODDER required p-aminobenzoic acid essentially in addition to thiamine which they required stimulatively. Rht. glutinis var. aurantiaca grew poorly in all the media tested, so this culture was not taken into consideration. It is noteworthy that these results are parallel to the serological data by SEELIGER, and TSUCHIYA, and from these facts it was pointed out that there exist two phylogenetic relationships : Rhodotorula glutinis-Rht. glutinis var. dairenensis-Rht. rubra and Rhodotorula minuta-Rht. pallida, and that the latter is related to the lactose assimilating red yeasts. Besides the above results, its was also found that two cultures of SAITO's Torula sanguinea (?) required nicotinic acid essentially. This strain was recognized as a special race of Rhodotorula rubra in the vitamin requirement, so the authors distinguished it from the ordinary race and named the former Rhodotorula rubra strain β and the latter strain α.
