Forty-six cultures of Rhodotorula preserved in Japan, which are lineal descendants from 12 old species studied by Dr.K. SAITO in 1922 and Dr.K. OKUNUKI in 1931,were collected and examined together with the authentic cultures of Cryptococcus ruber, Rhodotoruka glutinis, Rhodotorula tokyonsis and Torula mucilaginosa.Cell morphology, assimilation of sugars, utilization of potassium nitrate and colours of colonies on the three kinds of media were compared with the descriptions published by the original authors, LODDER in 1934 and LODDER et VAN RIJ in 1952. The following conclusions were derived from the studies. Assimilability of sugars and nitrate in all the cultures coincided with the descriptions by the above authors, hence, these properties were concluded to be available as a taxonomic key to Rhodotorula species, but the shape of cells is not available for this genus, for the elongation of cell forms has occurred in most species. For example, round or oval cells have often changed to oval, oblong or sausage shape in successive cultivations, and moreover, the form of elongated cells is variable under different cultural conditions. Colours of colonies are all included in the color range from yellowish red to orange, except two old species, Torula aurantiaca and Torula flava, which are to be regarded as strange coloured variants in this genus. A corrected disgnosis of the genus and a taxonomic key to its species are presented.
