Nine strains of bacteria were isolate from the activated sludge obtained in a deep aeration pilot plant in which bean-paste wastewater was treated at a BOS loading of 15 kg/m^3・day. Strain no. 5,identified as an Agrobacterium, made very large and easily precipitated flocs. It formed the largest amount of floc in the presence of 1 mM of magnesium ion. Addition of strain no. 5 culture to activated sludge improved the settling characteristics of the sludge.
