A deep aeration process capable of treating high-BOD wastewater at high levels of BOD loading was investigated. The relation between oxygen transfer rate (OTR) and superficial gas velocity (V_s) in a 10-m deep aeration tank is shown by the following equation.(OTR)=2.264×10^8 (V_s)^<1.185> In the treatment of bean paste wastewater at OTR values of 13,20 and 30 mol/m^3・hr, maximum BOD loading was found to be directly proportional to the OTR. Wastewater with a high BOD of 3,500 mg/l was treated at a maximum BOD loading of 15.3 kg/m^3・day at an OTR of 30 mol/m^3・hr. BOD removal and the sludge volume index (SVI) value were 93% and 90 ml/g. The power required to operate the 10-m deep aeration tank was 0.49 kWhr/kg-BOD removed.
