A method of scaling-up the aeration tanks in the activated sludge process by using oxygen transfer rate (OTR) as a parameter was investigated. As a result of increasing the OTR, which was measured by the sulfite oxidation method, in the aeration tanks, BOD loading increased. Bean paste wastewater with BOD values ranging from 340 to 1,540 mg/l was treated in a pilot plant aeration tank with cylinders with perforated plates at an OTR of 24 mol/m^3・hr. BOD loading levels with BOD removal rates exceeding 90% ranged from 1.0 to 5.5 kg/m^3・day, and SVI values ranged from 200 to 600 ml/g. These results agreed with those obtained with the same OTR in a bench-scale test.
