A large-scale aeration process was investigated with one deep aeration tank 5 m in diameter and three deep aeration tanks 8.7 m in diameter, all of which were capable of treating high-BOD wastewater at high levels of BOD loading. The relation between the oxygen mass transfer coefficient (K_La) and superficial gas velocity (V_s) in large-scale deep aeration thanks is shown by the following equation. (K_La)_<20℃>=21.2×(V_s)^<0.88> Bean-paste wastewater treatment was carried out in the 5 m diameter tank at the same oxygen transfer rate of 570 mg/l・h as was used for the same treatment in the benchscale apparatus. The range of BOD loading in which the BOD removal rate exceeded 90% was from 1.6 to 10.6 kg/m^3・day. The results obtained with the large-scale plant were almost the same as those obtained with the bench-scale apparatus. In the treatment of beet sugar wastewater with the three 8.7 m diameter tanks, the maximum BOD loading was 14.7 kg/m^3・day, and the power required was only 0.56 kWh/kg-BOD removed. These results indicate that very high-BOD wastewater can be efficiently treated with deep aeration tanks.
