Long-term continuous culture (two hundred consecutive days) of methanol-utilizing bacterium BNK-84 was studied at a dilution rate of 0.25 h^<-1>, 38℃, pH 6.6-6.8,and feed methanol at a concentration of 4 wt%.The cell yield for consumed methanol increased a little with the lapse of continuous culture time, and reached approximately 48 wt%. The contents of crude protein and amino acids for dried cells were constant for all the culture terms, and the content of crude protein was approximately 84 wt% and the content of amino acids was approximately 70 wt%. The cultures isolated from broth of a long-term culture were identical with strain BNK-84 on the basis of microbiological characteristics, deoxyribonucleic acid base composition, cellular fatty acid composition, quinone system, electrophoretic comparison of cell proteins, methanol dehydrogenase, catalase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and acute toxicity for mice.
