Sodium chloride tolerance and cultivation in a sea water medium of methanol-utilizing yeasts were studied.Hansenula polymorpha I-3 showed high sodium chloride tolerance for growgth. With continuous culture using a feed medium of 6 wt% methanol and 1 % sodium chloride or one-third strength sea water as a medium, the maximum dilution rate was approximately 0.21 h^<-1>, the cell yield was approximately 38 %, the content of the crude protein was approximately 56 %, and the content of amino acids was approximately 50 %. By the addition of more than 1 % sodium chloride, the maximum dilution rate and the cell yield were decreased a little. With continuous culture using a feed medium of 6% methanol and 3.0% sodium chloride or sea water as a medium, the maximum dilution rate was approximately 0.17 h^<-1>, the cell yield was approximately 35%, the content of the crude protein was approximately 55%, and the content of amino acids was approximately 50%. Furthermore, additional magnesium and calsium salts were not neede when using sea water for the medium.H. polymorpha I-3 was presumed to be the most suitable strain for the production of SCP on the basis of being able to use sea water for the medium.
