The degeneration of the nucleoside-antibiotic herbicidin A producing organism, Streptomyces saganonensis no. 4075,and its improvement were studied. 1) It was confirmed, by using a mixed culture of herbicidin-producing and non-producing strains, that the instability of herbicidin A production resulted from successive transfer of seed culture containing non-producing strains. 2) The growth rate of the non-producing strains was 1.4 times that of the producing strain. 3) Addition of 0.4 mg/ml of 9-β-D-arabinofuranosyl adenine (ara-A) selectively inhibited the growth of the non-producing strains. A high-producing strain was isolated on an agar plate containing ara-A (1.0 mg/ml).
