C309 CONVECTIONAL CONTROL IN SILICON MELTS UNDER A MAGNETIC FIELD(Rotation related natural convection)

Numerical calculations were carried out to study convectional mode and electrical field in silicon melts in a cylindrical container which is sufficiently long in an axial direction under no magnetic field, vertical and horizontal magnetic fields for Pr=0.013, Re_<cyl>=1183 and Ha=0, 21.5 and 53.7. At this time, fluid represented a rigid rotation for a vertical magnetic field. On the other hand, under a horizontal magnetic field, melt flow in the circumferential direction was suppressed at most of the areas except near the container wall. These flow patterns under vertical and horizontal magnetic fields could be successfully explained by considering an electrical field.
