Concerning viscosity measurement of Newtonian liquid, there are many kinds of methods like capillary methods, vibration methods and so forth. Similarly, as for thermal conductivity measurement, there are transient hot-wire method, forced Rayleigh scattering method and others. However, when it comes to measuring method and others. However, when it comes to measuring such thermophysical properties in practice, one needs to, for instance in viscosity measurement, calibrate a constant flow rate pump and a high accuracy differential pressure gauge, and to measure the out of roundness and uniformity of a capillary tube and so on in advance. On the other hand, in thermal conductivity measurement, one needs to prepare a special measuring cell, or an expensive optical measuring system etc. From those aspects, the methods cited above have also disadvantages at the same time, and could be stated hard to use with ease. In this study, for the purpose of developing a simple technique for measuring the viscosity and the thermal conductivity of Newtonian liquid, a new method, which applies natural convection around a heated vertical plate[figure] placed in a still Newtonian liquid, is proposed as shown in Fig.A-1. The apparatus is composed of a digital electronic balance, a beaker contained with tested liquid, a heated plate, a bar frame, a power source, a voltmeter, and a recorder. The viscosity can be obtained by substituting shear force acting on the heated plate, which is measured with the digital electronic balance, into an exact solution of the laminar boundary-layer equations to the corresponding system. In a similar manner, the thermal conductivity can be obtained by combining mean heated plate temperature measured with a thermocouple and an exact solution of the corresponding laminar boundary-layer equations. With the aim of verifying the principle of the proposed method, measurements of viscosity (Fig.A-2) and thermal conductivity using silicone oil with known thermo-physical properties have been conducted, and from the measured results, the present method is confirmed to be valid for measuring not only viscosity but also thermal conductivity of Newtonian liquids.[figure]
