513 Rarefaction and compressibility effects on heat transfer in micro-tube heat exchangers : Experimental results

Experimental results on rarefied gas heat transfer in micro-tubes are presented. Effect of varying Kn at constant Re on overall heat transfer coefficient was measured for three test sections consisting of parallel micro-tubes. The experiment was performed within maximum ranges of 0.0001<Kn<0.8 and 0.013<Re<920. At low Re, the overall heat transfer decreased with increasing Kn as a result of the temperature jump at the solid wall. For Re>45,the effects of compressibility dominated and the overall heat transfer coefficient increased with Kn increasing at constant Re due to expansion cooling of the air accelerating inside the tubes. At high Re, the expansion cooling therefore dominated over the opposite effects of viscous dissipation heating at the wall of the micro-tubes as well as the rarefaction effects.
