Results of collaborative research by Subcommittee on Superalloys and Coatings, The High Temperature Committee of Materials, JSMS, are presented, which cover the themo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) and isothermal low-cycle fatigue (ILCF) strengths of Ni-Base Superalloys and the protective coatings at elevated temperatures. Three kinds of Ni-base superalloys were selected as the substrate : a single crystal alloy, CMSX-4 ; a directionally solidified alloy, CM247LC ; and a pollycrystalline alloy, IN737LC. The solid cylindrical specimens were coated with the CoNiCrAlY alloy by low pressure plasma spraying and then aluminized. It was shown by the round-robin tests that the TMF lives of the coatings revealed the characteristic properties different from those of the bare materials. The TMF lives of the coatings was found to be hardly estimated only from the ILCF ones, without any understandings on the interaction between the substrate and coating. Based on the observations of the crack initiation, the fracture surface and the dislocation structures, the effects of the substrate alloy and the coating on the TMF and ILCF lives were discussed.
