The effect of the direction of solidification of Ni-based directionally solidified super alloy on the growth rate of cracks was investigated on the basis of long-term creep-fatigue experiments. The relationship between the direction of solidification and the growth rate of a crack was evaluated in terms of the formation and growth of the oxidized zone on the crack's surface. The growth rate of a crack is only slightly affected by the direction of solidification while, it seems, the size of the oxidized zone has a strong effect on the crack's growth rate. The effect of the size of the oxidized zone on the crack's growth rate was evaluated using a J-integral based on the finite element method and an energy-release rate based on a virtual crack extension. The size of the oxidized zone was found to have a stronger effect on the energy-release rate than on the J-integral.
