Frictional Characteristics of Mineral Oils in Sheet Metal Drawing : 1st Report, Lubricating Properties of Mineral Base Oils

As a first step of research into the friction and lubrication mechanism in deformation processing, friction tests on thirteen kinds of mineral oils, which have been refined by narrowing the boiling range, are carried out by using a blank-holder surface of sheet metal drawing as the test surface. Metal sheet used is commercially pure aluminium. The following has been concluded. (1) Naphthene base mineral oils have better lubricity than that of paraffin base mineral oils. This is due to the aromatic compound contained in relatively rich amount in naphthene base mineral oils. (2) Low viscous oils, whose viscosity is lower than 20 cSt. at 20℃, show good lubricity without exception in this experiment. This is due to oxygen dissolved in relatively rich amount into low viscous oils and the effect is not hindered if they are mixed with heavy oils. (3) Contact ratio i. e. percentage of real contact area relative to apparent contact area between tool and metal surfaces is influenced only by the viscosity of oils independently of kind of oils. The higher the viscosity is, the smaller the ratio becomes.
