Fundamental Characteristics of an Externally Pressurized Gas-lubricated Journal Bearing with Surface-restriction Compensation

The fundamental bearing characteristics such as bearing stiffness and damping coefficient of an externally pressurized gas-lubricated journal bearing with surface-restriction compensation through triangular grooves are analyzed by applying the concept of the equivalent clearance model. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental ones. The design criterion of this type of the bearing is discussed from the theoretical results of the fundamental bearing characteristics calculated under the variations of several bearing parameters, especially, the optimum groove depth for the maximum bearing stiffness is clarified.
