Induction of Thermotolerance in Mouse Foot with Prior Hypoxic Treatment

The effect of prior hypoxic treatment by clamping on the thermal sensitivity of mouse foot was investigated. When the blood circulation of foot was arrested with a tourniquet, thermotolerance was induced as determined by the increase of heating time, required to induce loss of one toe or the greater reaction in half the treated animals, i.e., RD_<50> The kinetics of thermotolerance was dependent on the prior hypoxic treatment time and the duration of interval between hypoxia and heating. Both magnitude of thermotolerance and interval time required for the expression of maximum tolerance increased with the hypoxic treatment time. From these results, it is concluded that thermotolerance is induced in mouse foot not only by prior heating but also by prior hypoxic treatment.
