The adult Swiss albino mice were treated with 5μCi/g body weight of tritiated water (HTO) in the presence (experimental group) and absence (control group) of 2-mercaptopropionylglycine (MPG). The liver was studied at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days after the HTO treatment. The percentage of binucleate cells and abnormal hepatic nuclei was also calculated. In the control animals the hepatic damage was pronounced and the recovery was delayed as compared with experimental animals, and the increase in percentage of binucleate cells and abnormal nuclei was also more remarkable in the control animals. During the last three decades, different sulfhydryl (SH) compounds like cysteine, AET and various mixtures of chemicals have been tested to find out their radioprotective actions on different biological systems. All these compounds give more protection at high doses but have a high toxicity which limits their value in the clinical field. More recently, Sugahara et al. have reported the protective action of a synthetic SH compound, 2-mercaptopropionyglycine (MPG) which is effective at a very low dose of 20 mglkg body weight. In our laboratory, protective action of this drug has been studied on different tissues after external irradiation. The present study is an attempt to investigate the protective action (quantitative and qualitative) of MPG on mouse liver against internal irradiation with tritiated water (HTO).
