The histopathological changes in the testes of adult Swiss albino mice exposed to a sublethal dose (500 R) of gamma rays after an intraperitoneal injection of 20 mg/kg body-weight of 2-mercaptopropionylgycine (MPG) were studied. The results have been compared with those obtained from animals irradiated with the same dose of gamma rays in the absence of drug. It was found that the drug delayed the disappearance of male germ cells and accelerated the regeneration of seminiferous epithelium when administered 15-30 minutes before irradiation. Histopathological changes were of much lesser degree in comparision to control. These results are discussed in the light of relevant literature. Numerous cheinical compounds have been tested for their ability to protect mammals against ionizing radiation. Thiol derivatives (e. g. cysteamine, cystamin, AET) have been proved to be amongst the most powerful class of protective agents. These radioprotective chemicals have very much limited application because of their high toxicity. Screening of chemicals has been continued in attempts to find out a compound with low toxicity and higher protective effectiveness. Sugahara et al. Nagata et al. , and Sugahara et al. have reported that 2-mercaptopropionylglycine (MPG) commercially known as Thiola, a detoxicating agent with a wide range of clinical application, is an effective protector against ionizing radiation.
