Studies on the postnatal somatic and behavioral activities of Small for Date (SFD) experimentally induced with microspheres (Msp) at the 18th day of gestation were performed, and the following results were obtained. 1) Delayed postnatal development of body weight based on intra-uterine growth retardation continued until the 14th week after birth. 2) Delayed activity of the spontaneous motility lasted until the fifth week after birth. On the other hand, response activities to the conditioned and unconditioned avoidance experiments were also delayed until the 13th week after birth. From these data, the authors confirmed that intra-uterine growth retardation could provoke postnatal retardation in both somatic and mental development.
