The lateral crystal growth rate of isotactic polystyrene lautaellae developing in thin filtt?s (ranging from 20 11111 to 500 nm) decreases with decreasing film thickness. The decrease in growthrate is inversely proportional to the filzaa thickness: G(D) : (117(c>o)(l - d/D), where G(D) is thegrowth rate in a filun of' thickness D, (7(cc) is the groxvth rate in the btnlk, and d is a constantwith a value of' approxiznately 6 11111. Additionally, cl. is observed to be indepezadent of' the crystallization temperattrre; naolectrlar weight and sttbstrate material trsed in this sttrdy. It is proposedthat the constant valtre of cl corresponds to the ttrbe diaraaeter in the reptation naodel of' polyraaerdynataaics, and that near the substrate this diataaeter is redttced, thereby redttcing the rnobilityof the molectrles, and consequently the crystal growth rate,
