X-Ray Study of Orientation-Phonon Coupling in Cubic NaCN

In a cubic phase of NaCN, anomalies of X-ray temperature diffuse scatteringsdue to C.. and (C.. - C..)/2 modes are observed. The intensity due to C.. modeincreases anomalously with decreasing temperature. Orientational disorder ofCN- ion in the cubic phase and its temperature dependence are analyzed by themeasurement of integrated intensities of X-ray Bragg reflections, and (100)-;<1 1 l>mixed model is obtained for the orientations of CN- ion. On the basis ofthis model, an expression of a linear coupling between the orientations and theacoustic phonons is derived. The observed temr>erature der>endence of the diffusescatterings is well understood as the coupling effect involving the temperaturedependence of the orientational disorder.
