Structure Analysis of the Phase Transition in KSCN

Crystal structures of KSCNJ are investigated with an X-ra)' diffraction method atseveral temperatures in the orthorhombic and the tetragonal phases. The nature ofthe order-disorder transition for SCN ions is confirmed above and below the transilion temperature. Thermal rxtotion of K" ions shoxvs a high araharmonicity in the a-bplane of the tetragonal unit cell. The spontaneous displace?nent of K" in the or-thorhombic phase correlates to the order parameter of SCN . It is suggested that thephase transition is explained by the orientation-phonon coupling system.
