Cubic-Rhombohedral Transition in RbNO_3 Induced by Orientation-Shear Strain Coupling

The cubic-rhombohedral transition in Nail type RbN0. crystal is theoreticallytreated as that induced by a coupling between orientation and shear strain. On the basisof a proposed 8-orientation model of NO. ion, the expression of linear coupling isobtained. The theoretical results are compared with experimental results reported in thepreceding paper (J. Phys. Soc. Japan 43 (1977) 1962). The observed transitiontemperature of the first order transition and the observed temperature dependence ofX-ray diffuse scattering in the cubic phase are well explained quantitatively by a valueof C'/c.., where C is a coupling constant. The estimation of the coupling constant fromthe interatomic forces also gives a support on the validity of the present treatment.
