X-Ray Study of Phase Transition in NaClO_4

The phase transition in NaClO. from the Nail-type cubic phase (0,7) to theorthorhombic phase (DJ7,) is investigated with X-ray diffraction method. In thecubic phase, X-ray diffuse maxima are observed at the .A'-points of the Brillouin-zone boundary. The intensity of the diffuse maximum anomalously increases withdecreasing temperature toward the transition point. In the orthorhombic phase,the intensity of the super lattice reflection sharply decreases near the transitionpoint and the lattice constant b shows anomalous expansion with increasingtemperatture. It is suggested that a coupling between multi-orientation of C10.1'ion and phonon plays an important role in the phase transition.
