The cross sections for the processes: 7K"A ""(Is)-4-H(Is)-+A'.x"-f-eft-[, Wlcalculated in tlte classical binary-encounter approxinaation (BEA,), where the Iand e in El are assumed to separately cc>llide with the Ton, and in the plane-wcBorn approximation (PWBA), where the contributions dtte to The strippung re,lions by H" and e in the scattering amplitude.are superposed. 'll'he cross secticare evaltmated for the processes which pfoduce II(Iss)(<m.) and those which prodtexcited and ionized Flea.) in the final s1.ate. For ions with Z.>6, the BEA tocross sections, scaled with respect to ZA, agree with those (a,(fa.) calculatedthe PWBA to within a factor of 1.1 at relative velocities less than 1.5 a.u. ato within a factor of 1.5 up to [0 a.u. In the PWBA approximalxion, the aver;excitation energy for atomic hydrogen is introduced in order to evaluate o., wYthe cross section becornes independent of this energ)z at suffieierntly high incidenergies. In the. BEA, such an average excitation energy is unnecessary.
