Time-of-Flight Measurement of Photoneutrons from O^<16>, Ca^<40>, and P^<31>

Energy spectra of photoneutrons from O^<16>, Ca^<40> and P^<31> were measured by the time-of-flight method, using the JAERI (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute) 20-Mev Electron Linac and its annexed 50-meter neutron flight path. The flight time of the emitted neutrons was measured with a fast time-of-flight system. The energy range of measurement covered almost the whole region of the giant resonance for each sample. Many fine structure peaks in the energy spectra were observed. The results were compared with the photoreaction and inverse photoreaction cross sections measured by several other authors. The agreement was satisfactory. Theoretical calculations of the dipole states in O^<16> and Ca^<40> by Elliott and Flowers, and Brown et al., explain the gross features of the observed spectra but not the details.
