A sinaple rnethod for the measurement of electron drift velocity in gases under electric fieldsis presented. In this rnethod, sinusoidally modulated electron ctrrrent through the drift spaceis naeasured xvith a lock-in amplifier in place of trsing two shutters. The phase delay of theelectron cttrrent referred to the electron release rate f'rona the cathode gives an accurate meantransit tinae of electrons through the drift distance between the cathode and anode. The resultsof prelinuinary measurements of the electron drift velocity in argon are in good agreernent withformerly reported data. In spite of sirnple procedttres, this method will be useful for accuratemeasurements of electron drift velocity in various gases over wide ranges of the reduced electricfi.ld.
